| Potential ecological impacts: Smith (1967) wrote that “Wherever found, they [ancylid snails] are likely to outnumber all other gastropods, and thus undoubtedly exert an appreciable effect on the ecology of trematode parasites in a given locality”. In its native range in North America, F. fragilis serves as intermediate host for many trematodes, including such taxa as Diplodiscidae (Megalodiscus temperatus), Strigeoidea, Spirorchiidae and Echinostomatidae. One can expect that in invaded areas the limpet also gets involved into the life cycles of various trematodes. |
