At least 24 alien species of fishes were reported to be in the waterbodies of Belarus. Many of them can reproduce under natural conditions and establish sustainable populations. In this paper we outlined the main negative ecological impacts that can be associated with the wide spread of invasive fishes in waterbodies of the Republic.

The paper reviews the results of introduction and acclimatization of fishes in Belarus. Information on 6 species is presented. Some recommendations for improvement of introduction and acclimatization are given.

In 1961, 32 lakes belonging to Vitebsk fish farm (nothern Belarus) were surveyed to desribe the hydrology, water chemistry, forage reserve for fish, and eco-biological parameters of the latter. The check list of fish species includes introduced Carassius auratus gibelio, Cyprinus carpio and Cyprinus carpio haematopterus.
