Three new species recently found in Belarusian waters (Semenchenko et al. 2009) have been added to the database, i.e. the amphipod Chelicorophium robustum, and fishes Clupeonella cultriventris and Pungitius platygaster.

The 16th International Conference on Aquatic Invasive Species (ICAIS) has been held in Montreal, Canada from April 19 to 23, 2009. This conference series has evolved over the last decade into the most comprehensive international forum for the review of accumulated scientific knowledge; presentation of the latest field research; introduction of new technological developments for prevention, monitoring and control; and discussion of policy, legislation, public education and outreach initiatives to raise awareness of the impacts of aquatic invasive species and prevent new introductions. Over 400 participants from all over the world attended this year Conference. They represented academia, industry, government agencies, NGOs and other institutions.

Dr. Sergey Mastitsky presented a poster entitled "Alien Fishes of Belarus: Diversity, Vectors of Introduction and Risk Assessment".

The pdf version of the Book of Abstracts and Power Point presentations of the talks can be found on the official website of the Conference.

Dear visitors,

Below please find a brief summary on what is known about the divesity of aquatic alien species in Belarus as of the beginning of 2009.

In 2008, 4 new established alien species have been reported from the waterbodies of Belarus, including the snail Ferrisia fragilis, amphipods Obesogammarus obesus and Obesogammarus crassus, and the fish Syngnathus abaster. Thus, there are 55 known alien species present now in the waters of the country. As previously, this pool of invaders is dominated by fishes and crustaceans - a situation very similar to that in many other parts of the world (figure).

Two new amphipod species, i.e. Obesogammarus obesus and Obesogammarus crassus, were found in June 2008 in the Belarusian part of the Pripyat River. This finding was published by Semenchenko and Vezhnovetz (2008) in the recent issue of the open access e-journal Aquatic Invasions. Both new amphipod species have been added to our database.
